The Role:

The (...) Press Officer reports to the Director of Media Relations and will work closely with legal, human rights, federal and state policy program staff and other key staff. S/he will also work in close coordination with other members of the communications team. The (...) Press Officer is responsible for developing and executing creative and aggressive strategies for increasing the Center's visibility in the media within the (...) at the local, state, and national levels; placing articles, interviews, and op-eds in key media outlets; developing supporting materials for all media campaigns; and prepping Center representatives for media appearances.


The (...) Press Officer plays a strategic role in the Communications Department, continually surveying the media landscape for upcoming opportunities and challenges—and working with colleagues within the department and cross-departmentally with program staff to coordinate strategies for responding to them, often on very tight deadlines.


This position will be based in New York City.


The (...) Press Officer's primary job responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Strategize, coordinate and execute proactive and reactive media relations operations to secure media coverage of the Center's work.
  • Work with the Director of Media Relations to identify opportunities and develop strategies for linking the Center and its work to national trends, as well as identify key crossover opportunities to link the Center's (...) and global work with other press officers.
  • Cultivate, maintain, and expand relationships with key journalists, bloggers, and other influential media figures that regularly cover legal, policy, women and reproductive rights issues in the national and local media.
  • Respond to daily (...) media inquiries, write press releases, and develop supplementary materials (including fact sheets, background briefings, and talking points memos) to provide journalists and Center staff with concise, compelling summaries of the Center's initiatives and messages.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for the Center's (...) Legal, Federal and State programs with respect to their media relations needs and prep Center spokespeople for press interviews and public appearances, including drafting talking points and key messages and providing both formal media training and informal prep sessions prior to each interview.
  • Work with the Director of Media Relations in developing and executing carefully targeted and innovative strategies for securing coverage of the Center's work and messaging.
  • Monitor trends and developments in media and culture related to reproductive rights issues in the (...) and the states, as well as working with the Global Press Officer in identifying global trends and opportunities to highlight the Center's work;
  • Maintain and expand the Center's database of national and state-based media contacts.
  • Oversee daily monitoring of relevant news and compilation of daily media reports distributed to staff, highlighting coverage of the Center and important trends.
  • Work with partner organizations on joint messaging and shared media goals as appropriate.
  • Work closely and collaborate effectively with other departments to ensure strategies are aligned across the organization.


  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in communications, journalism, public/media relations, or a related field;
  • Deep dedication to the Center's mission, values, and strategic objectives;
  • A minimum of seven years of experience in progressive media, journalism, and/or public relations, and a track record of success in raising the visibility of political, social, and cultural issues and organizations, and shaping public debate.
  • Broad awareness and deep understanding of the national media landscape and current and developing strategies for communicating effectively in a continually and rapidly evolving media environment;
  • Exceptional writing, editing and messaging skills;
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong intuition and instincts for translating trends and research findings into concrete communications opportunities—and an ability to move quickly and decisively to take advantage of them;
  • Strong organizational skills and a proven ability to concurrently manage a large number and wide variety of projects with strict deadlines;
  • Knowledge of reproductive rights, legal/court systems in the (...) and (...) federal government and politics is a plus.
  • Ability to travel within the (...) as needed and flexibility to respond to pressing media requests, sometimes outside of business hours.
