Director of Media Relations

 

What is the Role


The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, the leading national nonprofit dedicated to advancing the charter school movement, is recruiting a talented and motivated communications professional to join its growing team.
The Director of Media Relations will report to the Vice President of Communications and will help craft and execute the media relations and advocacy communications strategies that further organizational goals. The Director of Media Relations collaborates with all departments to ensure that communications opportunities are maximized. Specifically, the Director is responsible for increasing the volume of positive charter school news in print, broadcast, online, and on social media.
The ideal candidate must be a strategist and a tactician who is able to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. To be successful in this role, the Director of Media Relations will have strong communications experience but be looking to take their job knowledge and expertise to the next level.
What You'll Do
• Plan, develop and implement a strategic media relations program to enhance awareness of and support for the charter movement at the national level and to advance the National Alliance's goals which includes:
o Identifying and developing effective relationships with the key national media outlets covering education, education reform and legislative issues as they relate to public charter schools.
o Securing favorable press impressions in national media outlets (proactive story placement and support for the National Alliance and the charter school movement with broadcast, print, electronic, etc.).
o Strengthening our ability to generate and track "just in time" and "strategic" media wins including creating messaging and materials that allow the National Alliance to proactively and reactively respond to issues and priorities that are school-based, state-based or movement-wide based.
o Creating communications plans for major announcements to reach all stakeholders and media to assure accurate and timely dissemination of information. May include in-person news conference.
o Positively positioning the Board of Directors, CEO, leadership team and charter movement supporters with key media outlets.
o Directing media outreach for key organizational events including annual conference, Hill briefings, fly-ins, National Charter Schools Week, etc.
o Initiating and coordinating media coverage, serving as spokesperson, arranging press conferences, and coordinating editorial board briefings.
o Responding to media inquiries, scheduling interviews, and providing guidance to National Alliance staff being interviewed by media.
o Maintaining an extensive media contact database for national, state, regional and local broadcast, print and electronic outlets as well as education/trade related publications.
o Engaging the broader charter school community and empowering charter school leaders, teachers, parents, students and alum to tell their own stories, providing media training and engaging them as spokespeople on behalf of the movement.
o Supporting charter Support Organizations (CSOs), Charter Management Organizations (CMOs) and charter schools in their positive and proactive media outreach as well as providing guidance/advice in response to media inquiries.
o Working with national and state-based communications counterparts to plan and execute communications strategies.
o Drafting written content including news releases, op eds, talking points, letters to the editor, etc.
o Overseeing media clips for tracking and reporting purposes and provide access to media clips to National Alliance staff and other stakeholders.
o Managing vendor relationships with contractors associated with the media relations program.
• Lead the development and implementation of the communications efforts related to the National Alliance's federal, state and legal advocacy priorities which includes:
o Developing and executing media and communications outreach plans to support the federal team's efforts related to federal legislation, regulatory matters and the Charter Schools Program (CSP).
o Developing and executing media and communications plans for the organization's state advocacy priorities which may include supporting the state team's new state policy implementation, improving weak law state policies and the "National Public Charter Schools Commitment to Quality."
o Working in collaboration with the legal advocacy team, developing a communications plan to highlight the cases and efforts that the Legal Action Fund (LAF) is undertaking.

Who You Are


• You have excellent planning and prioritization skills.
• You have 10+ years of communications and/or media relations experience.
• You have experience in education policy, education reform, in an advocacy organization, on a campaign, or on Capitol Hill.
• You have significant experience creating and executing complex communications strategies with audiences on state and federal levels.
• You have experience working with national journalists; strong media contacts a plus.
• You have the ability to distill complex research into talking points for organization's spokespersons.
• You have strong interpersonal skills and verbal communication skills and are comfortable representing the organization to external audiences.
• You consider editing and writing as two of your top strengths.
• You have the ability to manage a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
• You are a igh energy teammatewith the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels.
• You are committed to working collaboratively with all constituent groups.
• You consider yourself a self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
