AIRPORT COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

The San Mateo County's Department of Public Works is seeking highly-qualified candidates for the position of Airport Communications Specialist. Under general direction of the Assistant Airport Manager, the Airport Communications Specialist will plan, organize and coordinate communication activities for the San Carlos and Half Moon Bay Airports. Located at the San Carlos Airport, this position is limited-term and will last up to three years.

 

Primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

• Coordinate the planning and implementation of airport communications-related initiatives
• Promote airport noise abatement procedures and fly-friendly programs
• Conduct community and pilot outreach activities
• Coordinate and implement directives authorized by the Airport Manager or Assistant Airport Manager designed to reduce community concerns from aircraft arrivals, overflights and departures
• Develop standard outreach methods for County staff members
• Develop and organize systems for managing, tracking and storing data to enhance customer service and effective communications
• Communicate directly and effectively with members of the community, airport tenants and businesses, transient airport users and aviation groups
• Ensure flight data sources accurately reflect San Mateo County Airport procedures, operations, rules, regulations and flight safety information
• Research and respond to noise complaints and community concerns
• Research, track and analyze flight track data to look for anomalies and trends, and provide comprehensive reports and graphs
• Ability to use GIS tools and techniques to read and interpret data visualizations including, but not limited to, maps, charts and aerial photos
• Attend community meetings to assist in and/or make presentations regarding Airport issues
• Coordinate press releases, bulletins, articles, campaigns and other public information materials
• Coordinate and develop content for the airport newsletter, website and social media tools
• Maintain an effective working relationship with a variety of public and private organizations and public officials, including other City County departments and agencies
• Create and conduct media relations training for Airport staff
• Perform related duties as assigned

 

In addition, the incumbent must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends to perform duties of the position (outreach, events, meetings, etc.).

 

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

 

• An understanding of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, policies, orders and grant assurances
• Experience working with noise abatement procedures, flight tracking programs and instrument flight procedures
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to condense complex issues into clear, concise and easy to understand language for public consumption
• Ability and experience in building strong internal and external working relationships
• Effective organization, multi-tasking and customer service skills
• Ability to respond to fast-paced and changing priorities and issues
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in aviation, communications, public relations, journalism, business or public administration or a closely related field
• Four years of professional experience with responsibility for public relations or a closely related field, and direct involvement in the preparation and dissemination of information to the general public
• Possession of a Private Pilot Certificate with Instrument Rating

 

NOTE: The current vacancy is a limited-term, at-will position. Limited-Term Employees are assigned to assignments not to exceed three years. They receive medical and dental benefits, similar to regular employees, and a defined contribution retirement plan. The eligible list generated from this recruitment may be used to fill future extra-help, term, unclassified, and regular classified vacancies.
