About the Organization:
The Goldman Environmental Prize honors the achievements and leadership of grassroots environmental activists from around the world, inspiring all of us to take action to protect our planet.
Grassroots environmental heroes too often go unrecognized, yet their efforts to protect the world's natural resources are increasingly critical to the well-being of the planet we all share. Thus, in 1989 San Francisco civic leaders and philanthropists Richard N. Goldman (1920-2010) and Rhoda H. Goldman (1924-1996) created the Goldman Environmental Prize ("Goldman Prize" or "the Prize").
The Goldman Prize continues today with its original mission to annually honor grassroots environmental heroes from the six inhabited continental regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, North America, and South and Central America.
The Prize recognizes individuals for sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, often at great personal risk. Each winner receives a monetary award, the largest award in the world for grassroots environmentalists. The Goldman Prize views "grassroots" leaders as those involved in local and regional efforts, where positive change is created through community or citizen participation in the issues that affect them. Through recognizing these individual leaders, the Prize seeks to inspire other ordinary people to take extraordinary actions to protect the natural world.

Communications Director:
Under the direction of the Executive Director and Deputy Director, the Communications Director will oversee the planning and execution of a strategic and comprehensive communications strategy to further the Foundation's mission, vision, and values, most importantly amplifying the voice, increasing the reach, and leveraging the work of the Goldman Environmental Prize winners. With leadership, the Director will be responsible for the Foundation's communications function, from the ground up, including hiring and managing staff and consultants. The Director is responsible for supervising one communications associate and working with program staff to publicize the work of the Goldman Environmental Prize through various print, broadcast, digital, and social media outlets. The Director will also work closely with several communications consultants, many of whom have supported the work of the Foundation for years. These partners work with the Foundation on many elements of communications, including film production, advertising, and domestic and international media. The Communications Director will report to the Executive Director and the Deputy Director.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Communications Director will perform the following and other duties as assigned:

Management
• With leadership, establish and maintain an effective communications team function, including the strategic direction, execution, budgeting, and implementation of activities.
• Collaborate with leadership and programmatic staff to develop external and internal communications strategies that will broaden the Prize's reach and deepen its impact.
• Ensure consistent content messaging across and among all leadership, staff, partners, and media platforms.
• Oversee the hiring, management, and mentorship of one communications associate.
• With leadership, oversee, manage, and coordinate communication activities in conjunction with public relations consultants, media freelancers, filmmakers, advertising contractors, and other communications vendors.
• Maintain and lead implementation of the crisis communications plan as needed.

Materials Production & Strategy
• In collaboration with leadership and our PR agency, build relationships with targeted media and journalists, internationally and in the US.
• Oversee the production of the e-newsletter, the yearbook, and other materials for the Prize, as well as the distribution and printing of materials.
• Oversee and develop communications technology for the Prize website and social media platforms.
• Develop and review relevant and timely social media content that connects current events and Prize winners.
• Prepare communications reports for Board meetings.
• Support Board members and Foundation leadership as needed with drafting speeches, talking points, and/or presentations.
• Maintain the office style guide and assist in the editing of the Prize dockets.
• Oversee photo, video, press release, and news print libraries.
• Oversee fulfillment of requests for media materials.
• Monitor daily print, broadcast, and social media for Prize related information.
• Maintain the press contacts database.
• Assist with other communications and media assignments as requested.

Environmental Prize
• Work with Prize winners, program staff, and collaborative partners (videographers, public relations, etc.) to craft and produce Prize winners' stories.
• Write and produce press materials for the Prize including the general announcement, biographies, backgrounders, and calls to action for Goldman Prize winners.
• Produce and disseminate media kits and other press materials.
• Work with the Deputy Director and our PR agency, manage all communications aspects of the Prize Tour in San Francisco and Washington, DC, including providing media coaching for Prize winners, coordinating the annual Press Day, scheduling national and international interviews, managing photography, and editing Prize winners' speeches.
• Manage, coordinate, incorporate, and archive communications content generated during the Prize tour in real-time.
• Monitor and report upon media coverage of the Prize winners.
• Assist with other communications-related ceremony projects and tasks.
• Maintain communication with past Prize winners to continue interest in and awareness of their work, increase their reach and impact, and further establish recognition and impact of the Prize.

 

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:
• 7+ years of communications experience
• Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public affairs, or a related field required, advanced degree preferred
• Proven track record overseeing the execution of major communications projects from conceptualization to completion, including budgeting, staffing, and performance management
• Excellent relationship building skills, intellectual curiosity, approachability, and willingness to listen to internal and external constituents and learn from their best ideas
• Experience in developing collaborative communications efforts with internal and external stakeholders
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and quickly learn new topics
• Media relations experience, specifically experience writing press releases and opinion editorials
• Knowledge of and experience in web strategies, digital media, and social media
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively while building credibility and support
• Ability to work in a team environment and participate in building group commitments toward goals and objectives
• Experience garnering earned media in an international corporate or nonprofit environment
• Ability to communicate about potentially controversial topics in culturally sensitive environments and successfully manage crisis communications
• International experience, especially in the developing world, highly valuable
• Foundation or nonprofit experience, with a passion for, or experience in the environmental sector preferred
• Foreign language skills, particularly Spanish, highly desirable
• Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications
• Willingness and ability to engage in occasional domestic travel, including ability to participate full-time onsite throughout the two-week Prize winner tour each April

Compensation and Location:
Goldman Environmental Foundation offers an excellent benefits package and a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience. This position will be located in San Francisco, California.
