Public Relations Specialist 3 (Science Writer and Proactive Content Provider)
Penn State Strategic Communications, Department of News and Media Relations is looking for a Science Writer and Proactive Content Provider. The position will write and edit news press releases about peer-reviewed research at Penn State. Build relationships with colleges and units to maintain or improve relationships with their writers and researchers. Plan content distribution for proactive media channels and to on-line channels and social media platforms to increase traffic and visibility for the University's research enterprise. Identify and develop story ideas by attending lectures and conferences and interacting with faculty to build professional relationships with various research centers and researchers. Develop and create social media campaigns and communications to promote research taking place at the University. Curate/produce research news web page, which includes building features, finding artwork, posting other stories as necessary, resolving technical problems, and maintaining the design of the pages/articles. Serve on editorial committee to help coordinate research coverage with the rest of the department. Engage/collaborate with colleges and division colleagues to pro-actively drive media coverage of science and research stories. Consult on Strategic Communications projects, as the Research Communications representative -- such as the Polaris and Penn State Today projects. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This job requires experience with writing and editing, a basic knowledge of of science, the ability to read and understand scientific journal articles, as well as the ability to make complicated science research accessible and comprehensible to the layperson. The individual holding this position will be expected to be innovative and current with emerging trends in the communication field especially social media and to participate/contribute on integrated teams. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year with excellent possibility of re-funding.
